Mental Health Patient Transfer Protocols Report Published
6/11/2008

The final report authored by the Illinois Hospital Association's Psychiatric Patient Assessment, Treatment, and Transfer Task Force on the assessment, treatment and transfer of patients to state-operated hospitals is now available. The task force included several ICEP members and staff.

The report discusses the new tools developed by the task force to help improve the processes associated with the assessment and transfer of a person with an acute mental illness from the emergency department to a state hospital.

The tools include a Medical Clearance Checklist to be completed by emergency physicians to determine whether the patient may be transferred to a state-operated hospital, and a revised set of Contraindications for Admission. Both tools are guidelines to streamline the patient transfer process. The task force also developed a monitoring form to help evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of the new transfer protocols and tools.

Hospitals are asked to begin implementing these new tools starting June 1.
