Rally at the U.S. Capitol

ICEP members Susan Fuchs, MD, FACEP, Ed Ward, MD, FACEP, Jolanta Peckus, MD, FACEP, Tom Nielsen, MD, FACEP, and Kathryn Bohn, MD, put on their white coats and display their rally signs.

More than 4,000 emergency physicians, emergency nurses, and other supporters waved their signs at the U.S. Capitol to send a message to Congress that emergency care in the United States is in critical condition and must be resuscitated.

The Rally at the U.S. Capitol was held the morning of September 27 on the West Lawn of the Capitol building during ACEP’s 2005 Scientific Assembly. Emergency physicians and nurses from across the United States begin to gather on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for ACEP’s rally.

“ER” cast member Maura Tierney appeared at the rally to share her own story about access to emergency care.

Peter DeBlieux, MD, FACEP, of Charity Hospital in New Orleans, is greeted with cheering and applause as he takes the microphone to discuss how Hurricane Katrina has only re-emphasized the need to preserve access to emergency care in the United States’ emergency departments.

Diane Salvatore, editor-in-chief of Ladies’ Home Journal, was present at the rally to show her support for ACEP’s cause.

U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tennessee) co-sponsored HR 3875, the Access to Emergency Medical Services Act of 2005 with U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas). At the rally, Gordon emphasized the need to pass HR 3875 by telling a personal story about his 4-year-old daughter being rushed to the emergency room because of a seizure.
