Three ICEP Members Honored for Service, Dedication with Annual Awards

Three ICEP members were honored during the Annual Business Meeting at the Spring Symposium in May at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Cai Glushak, MD, FACEP, Carolynn Zonia, DO, FACEP, FACOEP, and Walter Bradley, MD,
MBA, FACEP, were honored by ICEP for their contributions to the college and emergency
medicine.

Bill. B. Smiley Award
Dr. Glushak, of Chicago, is the recipient of the Bill B. Smiley Meritorious Service Award, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine in Illinois. The Bill B. Smiley award is ICEP’s highest honor.

Dr. Glushak is a Past President of ICEP and served on the Board of Directors for a total of three terms, serving from 1993 to 1996 and again from 1997 to 2003. He was President of ICEP in 2001-2002. Dr. Glushak is the Co-Chair of the Patient & Physician Advocacy Committee with Dr. Zonia and also represents ICEP as an ACEP Councillor. He remains active on the Finance Committee as well.

Nationally, Dr. Glushak is a longtime member of ACEP’s Section of Emergency Medical Services and recently served as a member of the Transitions of Care Task Force.

Dr. Glushak is the International Medical Director for AXA Assistance, a global company focused on providing emergency response and travel, healthcare and concierge assistance to individuals and companies worldwide. He is also an attending physician in the section of emergency medicine at the University of Chicago and an EMS physician for the Chicago South EMS System.

ICEP Meritorious Service Award
Dr. Zonia, of Hinsdale, is the recipient of the ICEP Meritorious Service Award, honoring her significant contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine by exemplary service.

Dr. Zonia is a Past President of ICEP and served on the Board of Directors from 1998 to 2006. She was ICEP President in 2003-2004. She serves as Co-Chair of the Patient & Physician Advocacy Committee with Dr. Glushak. She is also a longtime member of ICEP’s Education Committee.

She served as co-course director for ICEP’s APLS*PALS course for many years and continues to regularly serve as faculty for the Oral Board Review Courses. She was the recipient of the Bill B. Smiley Award in 2008.

Dr. Zonia is an attending physician at Loyola University Medical Center, where her time is split between the adult ER and the pediatric ER. Dr. Zonia is an active member of the Illinois EMSC Advisory Board and was recognized with the Ronnie Lee Award for Excellence in Pediatric Care by the Illinois Department of Public Health in 2004.

Downstate Member Award
Dr. Bradley, of Moline, is the recipient of the Downstate Member Award, which is conferred upon an ICEP member from outside the metropolitan Chicago area who has made a consistent effort to advance emergency medicine in Illinois despite lengthy travel.

Dr. Bradley was a member of the ICEP Board of Directors from 2000 to 2007 and served as Secretary-Treasurer during this time. He stepped down from the Board in 2007 because of a potential conflict of interest when he was appointed to the position of Senior Medical Administrator for the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Dr. Bradley served ICEP as Chair of the EMS Committee and the Illinois EMS Forum for six years, and continues to be an active member of the EMS Committee today. He remains involved in numerous other EMS activities, including his role as Director of the Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team and Medical Director of the Moline Police Department’s Tactical Medicine Team. He was recognized with the IDPH Directors Award for Outstanding Services and Leadership in EMS in 2008.
